Wrap tach wire around spark plug wire 3-4 times.

Do you have additional sensors, or just the RPM wire?
Personally I take a fuel line, cut a line down the middle, and wrap my RPM wire from the engine all the way to the steering column. That way the wire is protected from chips, rubs, or other wire voids (cheap insurance). I run asphalt tracks, so those asphalt pebbles come in fast/hard and can do serious damage to a raw unprotected wire. Probably not as a big as a deal on dirt tracks.
