Bigger HP Clutch Question

At what point do you need to move away from drum / plate clutches to something else?

I'm talking about running a 390 or 420 clone with a 1" shaft.

I know a thing or two about 3/4" clutches, but the trail goes a little dark when I start poking around with bigger-block options.

The best thing to do and what most people do is run a jack shaft. This gets weight off of the crank and removes unnessecary heat from entering the motor from the clutch. With a jack shaft you can run a 3 disk clutch (Bully or Tomar) and have good results if proper maintenance is performed.
