Breaking block

I've had 2 blocks break right above the front (away from the cylinder) bolt holes. Why??? Would it work to make a girdle.
 
Many things come into play here and your post is so vague we can't begin to guess...

What class? How many RPM's? How old are the motors? So many factors can play into this.

Why . Your loading it harder then it can stand .
A girdle sure isn't going to hurt .
Welded reinforcements at the break site would be even better .
Problem one spot gets stronger another spot shows weakness .
