Briggs 305 Spring Install Problem

I bought a set of Comp dual valve springs for my Briggs 305. Unfortunately, the exhaust side valve seat is raised approximately 1/2" and interferes with the inner spring. Does anyone know how to get around this problem? Do I need to remove the head and have the seat cut flush to match the intake side seat?
