Briggs flathead engines

Hello, just recently I had bought a few Briggs flathead engines that look to be built modified engines that are complete. They have been sitting far about a year from what I’ve been told, My question is how can I notice what fuel these engines were ran with? They all have tillotson like carbs.(FYI) the engines were completely drained before stored.

Notice how the left tilly has less fuel stacks on top and the other 2 have taller stacks? That's generally a dead give away on which fuel a diaphragm carb is setup for.

Very strong chance your carbs need rebuilt! Very strong chance they're setup to run methanol. Have you owned a tilly before? Post some pictures to better help:)

Better picture here to see the dual stacks on an HL tilly.

Ok I’ll send pictures of them in the next few days because I have the engines in my storage right now. And also what fuel do the carbs with taller stacks usually run? Because I believe that’s how the carbs looked but I’m not 100% sure. And Thanks for the help

There should be numbers stamped in the carb body near the intake mounting flange to identify the particular carb you have. Should be able to tell by the numbers what the carb was originally for.
Okay I’ll have to check them out later I’ll keep you posted. Thanks

Most likely!? The single stack is gas and the double stackers are alcohol. Most likely! The Red cap is high volume cap. But still get the numbers on the bottom.

...and keep in mind that just about every Tillotson carb used in karting has been modified (drill pattern, etc.) for whatever fuel they've been used with.
High percentage of likeliness that since these were on flatheads, that they are set up for alcohol.
Easy way to tell is to run them -- they'll run like crap on the wrong fuel.
If you run them on gas and they are waaaaaaaaay too rich, then you know they're alky carbs.
Run them on alcohol and they run all the way up in rpm, then you've got alky carbs.

Pull the stacked off and see how big the metering holes are or if it’s T-slotted. Big metering holes or T-slotted is alcohol. Small metering hole for gas.

I think , You need to pull the welsh plug to check the metering holes .
You are correct for the low side circuit. I probably didn’t use the right term. What I am referring to is the holes that allow fuel from the large diaphragm area into the passages to the adjustment screws. If the carb is T-slotted, the holes will not be present. I’ve never seen a gas carb that was T-slotted. But if the holes are present, the size of those holes will tell you if it’s gas or alcohol.

Post some pictures to better help:) hey, here are 2 out of the 8 engines I bought. The blue covered engine has the HL-360A tilly carb and the white covered engine has the HL-314G tilly carb, from my research there both gas carbs. Also does anybody know info on that clutch? All I know is that it’s a horstman 2 disc clutch, I would like to know the engagement rpm on it.
