Carbon fiber axle

Just received a call back, $1575 before s/h. They aren't making them until end of first quarter. They are also a military supplier as well.

If I were motivated, I'd order some 1.12 carbon tube, put it in a 1.25 OD steel tube with 1/16" wall thickness, machine in some keyholes, and call it a extrathin axle with carbon stiffner.

But since stiffness increases radically with DIAMETER instead of THICKNESS, I'd switch to 1-3/8" or 40mm axle.

It was the 222 Axle, she has a few people on the list for when they make them. But honestly 1500+ for an axle that's 5lbs lighter, that's a tough pill for only 5 lbs.
 
BAC said they are a very busy military supplier and would have to try and make one in between production runs and the timeline is unpredictable. Said they make them in 33" and 36" lengths.

5lb in reduced rotating mass is huge. Don't believe they're NKA legal since they're not made of a ferrous metal. Pretty easily caught with a magnet in the tech barn.

These are aluminum with a carbon core. They dont just check one spot. The stick a telescoping magnet inside the tube as well. There is no way to get around it without going to measures that would negate its purpose unless you had it dipped in a magnetic coating.
Was this price for a carbon fiber axle or an aluminum axle with a fused carbon fiber stiffener that Brian mentioned?

Well worth the money to 1% of karters.
Sometimes people lie to convince themselves that they made a good purchase, but in the end no where near worth the money, just more fools separated from their money
Id say 2 tenths at the races paying $5000,$10,000,$20,000 after winning those were worth the money for that 1%.
Im not saying go buy this axle, BUT someone who can afford it and dont mind cheating, this is an advantage.

don't wash your kart. aluminum is extremally hard to bond due to the formation of aluminum oxide if there is not a fiberglass boundary layer between the carbon and aluminum it will create a cathode battery and eat away at the aluminum every time you wash your kart. using aluminum and carbon together are bad practices. most serious people use titanium or steel when using carbon.
that being said most of the big big big races have been won with the stock axle. you'd be better off buying a set of tires and wheels from a reputable tire guru and asking questions, following their advice and gaining some knowledge. worth more than a 1/10th 99% of the time.

A major kart manufacturer tried carbon fiber axles several years ago. With a top driver, the kart was actually slower. Too much flex. That was 10-12 years ago and things may have changed. IMO just as expensive fad.
 
Had some jetski drive shafts made out of CF in 88'. Not worth the time and money invested, yes they were lighter...but as reduced rotational mass they didn't really do you any good. Too close to the center line too realize much benefit. I'd use them one race and sale them, just like I did with the cranks.
