I don’t think so. I had to replace the rod and crank. While I was at it I put a push button kill switch on it. Started up right away. But after shutting it off it started acting stupid.

Right here may be your problem.
I could count on one hand the number of kill switches used, and not causing problems from the flathead days. Guys found an alternate method of turning the engine off.
Even the factory kill button for the LO206 can give problems.
Unhook the kill switch and see if your problem changes.
