crank gear

Removed bearing cause crank gear had a lot a play. When I pressed bearing off to remove gear I found no journal or keyway in crank just a hole in crank with wat ever was sticking up to hold gear broken flush with crank. The gear does have a key way which has no damage. When I pressed bearings off what ever was broken fell to shop floor. It appears maybe a set screw or a pin protruded from crank. Anyone seen this? I figure I can remove wat ever is left in crank, but don't know what was there.
 
Crank is original from early 70's cool bore single bearing, owned it since 83, so i know no one messed with it.
 
Thanks, found it on ebay 3 bucks, didnt wanna scrap crank, cant believe journal is just a tad over .997. Its from about 71 original equip on my Taco 100 bike. They said those old cranks just dont wear, just keep changing oil. I believe 'em
