De-tension rings/ lapping

lapping the flat side is done by hand. piece of glass or marble and 600-1000 grit
there is a fixture to hold the ring.
old block and a propane torch is the old school way. to de tension .

"old block and a propane torch is the old school way. to de tension . "

I think I resent that remark............

actually I've used the tapered ring installation cylinders to do that for years

I use an old ring compressor for flatheads, for clones I use dyno cams low tension rings because when heated they want to turn up on ends a bit.

LMAO, I invented the low tension rings back in the flathead days when everyone was grinding the o.d. down to minimum tech, I bored a cast iron plumbing pipe sleeve (cast iron won't warp when heated) .100 over stock size for the top ring, .080 for the second and oil ring with a shoulder to hold them square, then I put 75 to 100 in it, turn them cherry red with my torch while running my lathe in back gear, once they're soaked cherry red i'd spin en up to 1000 rpms while they cooled, made a few 1000 sets till the guy selling them blabbed how I did it.
