Flathead questions

When i retourqe the head bolts should I loosen them first?
I have 5 races on new motor.I was told I should change the carb.diaphram..would an overdue diaphram make the motor fall off a bit? Thanks

Myself i would just check them .
Too rich will shut off and on on top end , sorta a fluuter .
Diaphragm usually causes start issue . 5 races is enough though on that .

Loosen them all 1/2 turn before retorquing 10 inch pounds at a time.
Be sure to follow the correct bolt pattern.

Diaphragm is a fuel pump -- if it isn't working, the engine isn't starting.
We replace them on rebuilds only, and tell our customers not to change them unless the engine has sat for a long time and allowed the diaphragm to dry out.

To me: diaphragms and spark plugs are like factory workers...
When they stop doing their job when they're told to, it's time to replace them.

It won't hurt to replace spark plugs and diaphragms, but it is certainly not necessary unless there is a problem with them.

A diaphragm is a cheap and easy way to help ensure a good day. I used to change them every week with alcohol.
