Hot boxes

How necessary are they ? Would you run one with a prep pan in the bottom so the tires are constantly rotating in prep or just wipe prep on and close the lid ?

A hot box is a tool. Tools are a wise investment that generally hold their value extremely well.
You will use a hot box to prep and size tires regularly, so most find them very useful (at the track and at home.)

To me, the pan is essential. Not so much for pan rolling, but to catch what drips off of the rollers and not make a total mess of the box itself.
We wipe prep in our boxes regularly. Very rarely will we pan roll anything.
Closing the lid limits the smell in the shop, and also limits the amount of evaporation of prep (putting more prep into the tires where it belongs.)

This is valuable info for us new guys. Should be a place for newbees to find this like in the GOTO section.

Glad to see you're utilizing the search function on these forums though. That's probably the least used feature at our fingertips -- well, that and the membership subscription. :)
If you had been around a few years back, before Bob's big crash, there were years and years of information on here that we'll never fully recover. It's nice that our sport has been fairly open to sharing information all along. None of us are getting rich doing this, and to most racers this is just a hobby. We're just blessed to be along for the ride.
