I would start by installing the crank in the block then put the side cover on without a gasket and no bolts. Just hold it on and use a feeler gauge and check the clearance between the block and side cover. That should give you a starting point as to the thickness you need, then measure the thickness of your gaskets and get about .015 -.20 thicker than your feeler gauge reading. Install gaskets and side cover, torque to spec then check end play of the crankshaft with a dial indicator. Adjust gasket thickness to get the end play you want.
