Here is a before and after of true insanity. The after picture of the one on the left is done all the way to 800 grit the one on the right only to 400 so far but my arm is dead lol. Plan to hit with buffer and buffing compound to knock the swirls out......another day

Depending on your end goal, truck wheel cleaning acid may make your life easier.

If you don't coat the buffed finish with something, it will revert to the oxidized look anyway
 
I have an aluminum bodied car with no paint. It gets difficult if you are looking for a mirror finish. At a certain point wool pads are too corse and you have to switch to foam. In the end buff with a clean cloth and corn starch to pick the last of the black polishing compound out of the swirls.
 
Here's the final product. Right before reinstall I will do a final buff and wax
