I Just Acquired A Clements Engine

R4 shouldn't need welded.
If you are using dual springs, you shouldn't need lifter bores welded, although most builders will anyway.
With big lift cams and the correct springs, you shouldn't be floating springs anyway. Bad things happen when you float springs on a limited or open mod. :)

Its a flathead engine . Cylinder filling is more important then the exhaust cycle .
Getting air in is much harder then getting air out .

^ .030" would be minimum for sure. I aim for .035" but honestly .050" won't hurt you and allows for a little valve float. Piston to head clearance is determined by piston pop-up, cylinder head machining, and head gasket thickness. Being that you have no head gasket currently, the sky's the limit on how much you want to "squeeze" it. More compression will make more power; but at the expense of more heat, more pressure, and more parts failures. It's a trade-off that you'll have to make a decision on.

The Head "Ceiling", if you will......the Intake is cut in the area of .120" deeper than the Exhaust. Pretty cool. Have y'all seen this type of Head?
