Yes, lots of threads helps eliminate damage to the crank threads.

I cut a couple of wedges from a 2x4 that would fit between the flywheel and block in opposite locations, tapped them firmly between, and struck the crankshaft firmly. It always works and so far I haven't damaged anything. This, of course, was in the days when people could afford a 2x4.
