NASCAR announces sweeping changes to Chase

NASCAR is guaranteeing that the Sprint Cup Series season championship will come down to the final race of the year.

The sanctioning body announced Thursday that the final race of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway will be winner-take-all. The top four drivers in the points standings heading into the season finale will be eligible for the title and the highest-finishing driver will win the championship.

The Chase playoff format will still consist of the final 10 races of the 36-race season. However, the Chase field will be expanded from 12 to 16 drivers in 2014.

With the expansion of the Chase field, NASCAR will eliminate drivers every three races.

After the first three races, the Chase will be whittled down to 12 drivers, eliminating the four lowest-scoring drivers.

After the next three, the Chase will be down to eight drivers, and after the ninth race of the Chase, four drivers will be left. Those are the four drivers eligible to win the championship.

Imo this makes the championship less meaningful because you beat someone in one race not 36 or whatever. The stat would look good on the resume but just wouldnt mean as much, but winning 10 races would be a bigger accomplishment imo

Another way to "try" to beat Jimmie.

I think its the exact opposite ... they want him to get the 7th and maybe more

these rules also apply.....

A victory in the first 26 races all but guarantees a berth in the 10-race Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup

A win by a championship-eligible driver in any Chase race automatically clinches the winning driver a spot in the next Chase round

He's very capable of doing both which makes him a shoe in

What ironic is that NASCAR wants to award winning. But I just read on USA Sports that Dale Jr (Didnt win in 2013) would have been the Champion last year if the new format would have been in place last yr

•New points system, Earnhardt Jr. would had won championship in 2013: In announcing major changes to the Chase for the Sprint Cup on Thursday, NASCAR chairman Brian France touted an emphasis on winning as a primary reason behind the format. But it turns out last year's champion, if the new rules were applied, would have been #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr., who didn't win a race. According to economist Andrew Maness, who runs the nascarnomics.com site, Earnhardt would have made the final race along with Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon. NASCAR's Mike Forde confirmed the lineup. The driver who won the most races last season, Matt Kenseth with seven, would not have been eligible for the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.(USA Today)(1-31-2014)

I started reading about the new rules and realized that I don't really care. I used to be a huge fan. It just isn't the same anymore.

I suppose it's just a coincidence that a "winner takes all" championship race takes place at Homestead-Miami, which is owned by International Speedway Corporation (aka the France family). If this format is widely accepted, then different tracks need to be used for the championship race. I too believe this is another gimmick in a long line since the latest France generation took over the reins. My opinion has always been a champion is not necessarily the team with the most wins, but the one that is there week in, week out.

This format still doesn't help Danica :D Maybe they could include a rule that any girl that looks like a model and finishes in the top 25 in any race also gets in the final race and if she finishes in the top 30 she is the automatic champion of the world. Then she would maybe have a chance...Maybe

Miami has hosted the final race for over a decade now, so its not new. So far every article ive read or show i have watched said that they will most likley switch the tracks around.

They will probably have tracks/cities bid on it like they do the Super Bowl
