No head gasket

I bought a 5 hp flathead and decided to take it a part to see if I got what I was told was in it I pulled the head and no gasket was on it I’ve never seen any motor with out a head gasket and the exhaust valve is extremely loose side to side like there’s no guide in it at all.my question is is it possible that both surfaces are machined and don’t need a gasket I’m stumped why there’s no gasket but the motor ran ?
 
After I rechecked the head it had a .054 piece of aluminum Looks just like a gasket you couldn’t even tell it was there stuck to the head. I’ve never seen a gasket made out of aluminum took me awhile to figure it out
