Is there an alternative that gives recourse for buyers? Perhaps one that takes a smaller percent and doesn't hold the money until the eagle screams?

Venmo now has a goods and services option with some protection. Fees are a little less but not sure on the holding requirements. PayPal owns Venmo though so it's probably similar.
