Piston ring end gap

I am building a B&S animal motor (methanol). Just wondering what the piston ring end gaps should be. Will I need to get over size rings. I purchased stock ring sets. I am being told that the end gap on stock rings is going to be to big. I have been told that .003-.004 on the top two rings is what I should have. Any info would be appreciated. Anyone know what std ring set has for end gap. Thanks for ant feed back.

Clearly depends on the wear in your cylinder.... But I think most stock rings will be in the 8-12 thousands range in a fresh stock bore. Quite a ways from 0.004 ;)

Depending on the size of your bore (piston to sidewall clearance) the briggs top ring is oversized. I use to have to file quite a bit off but at some point last year I found they started coming with approx -1 to +.003 end gap already in place.

I do not see a need to use oversize rings.

I like my top ring tighter than that -- but you are right -- if you sort through a few new top rings, you can find one the same bore size that is a bit tighter on end gap.
