raptor or flat head

Initally it was improvment in material .
Better rods , better pistons and improved blocks ..
Old blocks had no connector between ports and spring chamber .
Built in dipper . Short skirt , barrel ground piston with thin rings .

All Briggs Raptor engines are flatheads. Not all flatheads are Raptors.

The evolution of the blocks and parts was ongoing through the latest Raptor 4 kit engines. Each had some changes to them, some better than others. The first thick casting 135XXX blocks (affectionately called "fat blocks") are still good blocks to build. The R4 blocks (only ever available in kit form or bare blocks) have the beefier lifter bores (easily identified by the lack of an oil drain plug in the rear of the block) that do not need welded. Piston design change didn't come about until the R3, prior to that, the lawn and garden piston and rings (not interchangeable) were used in R1 & R2 engines. You can use R3 pistons in earlier blocks, but they require R3 rings and much tighter clearances than the older lawn and garden pistons.

Is there something specific that you would like to know, George?
