Can someone please tell me how the two compression rings go on the piston with the taper? I know the 0 faces the top, but not sure which taper goes on the top and the bottom.
If the tapers are around the wrong way. Will that make the engine blow smoke?

Yup

The "0" goes up.
The chrome ring is the compression ring and the "taper" goes up.
The second (scraper) ring, the taper goes down.
Sometimes it helps me remember if I know the reason why (it's the teacher in me). On the chrome compression ring, the taper goes up because it is using the air velocity on the compression stroke to push the ring outward and prevent any air loss on the compression stroke. On the scraper ring, the taper points down because we are using the air velocity to push the ring outward to "scrape" the oil from the surface on the down stroke so it is clean for the next upward stroke.
