RIP- Ocala Grand Prix (OGP)

OGP just announced their permanent closure. Unconfirmed rumor was that they had been running (financially) in the red for some time now. Then the legislation was passed that closed down the rental side of their business, and they just couldn't bounce back. Pretty sad because I've heard very good things about that track and the staff who worked there.

I hope Monticello Karting picks up their business, its one of the closest tracks and is a wonderful place to run.

Steam from an injury or fatality down south near Miami. Then the state got involved and somehow tracks were forced to choose a side. Be a race track and hold events, or be a rental track open to the public (but not both). Rumor was whomever got injured wasn't from the area, and had family ties in Washington DC; who put pressure on the state legislators.

Places like OGP, between their insurance rates skyrocketing, and the loss of their rental kart income; just couldn't bounce back financially.

Don't understand how that makes things safer. they use to have some pretty dumb karting laws in NJ too.

I understood that rental karts needed 2" or 4" steel barrier to keep the karts from running. Not what is used for race karts. It was a choice.

In reading that statute I don't see how tracks can't do both. It just says they need a permit for rentals but races are exempt from permit requirements. I'm pretty sure Orlando still rents them too.
