Surface rust on axle

Hello,

What is everyone doing for surface rust on axles? My axle has just a little surface rust and I am just trying to figure out how to get rid of it and how to keep it from getting there in the first place.

Thanks...

If it's real light rust, a red scotchbrite pad will work. If it's a little worse than that you'll need to go lightly with sand paper (220). if you see any high spots from set screws or high edges along key ways, take them down with a smooth flat file. Don't leave a rough surface. Once the rust is gone finish with finer sandpaper (400) then buff with red scotchbrite. Clean the abrasives off with wd40 and get the key ways too. Then coat with motor oil and wipe it off with a clean rag. This will leave a thin coat of oil that will protect longer than wd40. When you put your wheel hubs on, clean the ends of the axle and wheel hubs with brake clean and put them on dry.

The rust is very light, I will follow with the suggestions. I would assume from what JPM states that once the anodizing is worn off it will continue to rust.

Thanks, I just wanted to confirm what I was planning on doing was what everyone else would do.

Cleaning after race we use WD-40 on everthing

Most axles are plated (zink or other) or nitrided. Aluminum is anodized.
Just like chrome or any other kind of plating - if it is rusted (surface or not) there's little chance of saving it aside from WD40 after every wash.

Calcium on track surfaces plays rough.

While the axle may not be needing replaced yet, the effort to remove it and the cost to retreat it probably won't be worth your effort (and cost.)
