Does it start reading rpm when the motor starts running or do you have to turn the tach on? On racing tachs they shut off after a little bit or you can choose to shut them off right when you get off the track.

This is correct for the ones I have.

Have some more than 5 years on same battery.
Shows hours of operation when engine not running.

Battery seems to last forever in these but yeah its irritating you cant shut it off.
