The 2015 Corvette Z06: Now With An 8-Speed Automatic

Numbers like 620 HP, 635 lb-ft, and 8 gears, if Hot Rod magazine is to be believed.

They apparently gave up the goat, before quickly pulling it down, according to C7StingrayForum.com.P

The numbers are pretty much bang-on with what we heard earlier.

In addition to a seven-speed manual transmission, the Z06 will actually be offering an eight-speed automatic, as well, in the form of the 8L90E. P

I actually read that the 8-speed automatic really has a torque converter. Could it be a CVT (continuously variable transmission) with programmed "shift" points for feel?

no it is not a cvt, cut from racer.com article

"The eight-speed automatic is tuned for world-class shift-response times, and smaller steps between gears keep the LT4 within the sweet spot of the rpm band, optimizing the output of the supercharged engine for exhilarating performance and greater efficiency.

For performance driving, the transmission offers full manual control via steering wheel paddles, and unique algorithms to deliver shift performance that rivals the dual-clutch/semi-automatic transmissions found in many supercars – but with the smoothness and refinement that comes with a conventional automatic fitted with a torque converter.

In fact, the 8L90's controller analyzes and executes commands 160 times per second, and wide-open-throttle upshifts are executed up to eight-hundredths of a second quicker than those of the dual-clutch transmission offered in the Porsche 911.

Featuring four gearsets and five clutches, creative packaging enables the GM-developed eight speed automatic to fit the same space as the 6-speed automatic used in the Corvette Stingray. Extensive use of aluminum and even magnesium make it more than eight pounds (4 kg) lighter than the six-speed, as well. Along with design features that reduce friction, the 8L90 is expected to contribute up to five-percent greater efficiency, when compared with a six-speed automatic."

As much as I love rowing my Mustang around with the manual transmission, if I still lived in the People's Republic of Maryland and commuted through Washington, DC to an office in Arlington, VA just west of National Airport about a quarter of a mile as the crow flies, I'd grab the automatic and be done with that part of driving. Just driving around York, PA in or near rush hour as I sometimes have to do now is often a pain with the stick shift - seems like I'm putting an awful lot of work/wear on the clutch. Maybe I'm just getting old....

It's a shame, but you are speaking common sense. I bought a 350Z and at the last minute I ordered it with the automatic. I was driving a BMW 5 speed but it was taking me 50 minutes to get to work and I only had to drive 9 miles to get there. It is a shame, almost sacrilegious, to buy a sports car with an automatic. That being said, I never regretted going with the automatic. I have wanted to buy a Vette for decades, but the roads here in MA are so freakin' terrible I can't see spending that much on a car to go down the highway like I am riding a bucking bronco. The bridges here NEVER get repaired properly. They may throw a fresh coat of asphalt on the road, (if you're lucky) but the bridge surfaces never get fixed. I have been going over a pair of bridges on rt 495 that go over rt 2 for 6 years now and they have had signage posted the entire 6 years "BUMP" and they act like they are in the middle of the construction phase, which they are not. RT 93 South going into Boston is so bad you can barely hang on to the steering wheel even at 35 mph. I know if I had a Corvette the first thing I would think of is "this is nothing at all like the brochure." I am begging my wife every day to move out of this state. I hate Winter time, I absolutely despise the politics here and I seriously want to get out of here.
