TIMING

Will too much slow you down? I installed a PVL flywheel which is 28 degree with the stock key , Later i put in a 4 degree key and it seemed to slow down, But I cant see 4 degree making that much difference.

Thanks

Put it on a degree wheel. You would be surprised how inaccurate the flywheel timing and timing keys are. I had a billet flywheel fully lapped with stock key with 32 degree advance in it and it was sitting at I want to say 35 with the degree wheel. You may very well be in the high 30s without knowing it which is when you lose power and have poor performance.

If the key is in backwards it retards timing .
The advanced timing also starts the fire earlier which means the piston is farther down the cylinder . Compression stroke .
in turn the flame front is providing resistance that the engine has to overcome before it can provide power for the power stroke .
without a corresponding increase in rpm advanced timing may not improve power .
