running a clone in jr2 class .500 plate. we started w a 12-70 gear. good through corners, not straights 1/8 mile flat heard a couple guys saying they was running 13 65-67
haven't tried that yet

my question is this on open or unplated motors, u just gear what you want mostly. but on the clone motors do you want less gear to rev longer til you get to that point. like I figured the 12-70 would get off the corner better. kart and driver weigh 306

You should ask your engine builder for a target rpm, probably 5800-5900 for purple. Keep pulling gear until you stop getting faster. Sometimes less rpm's is faster on plate motors. You can run the 13-65 and see how it does for you, it should be close. We don't always run the same gear as everyone else, but close.

Clone you would Gear Less more towards Torque.

Examples : our 1/8th mile Banked dirt momentum track a blue Plate F/H or Animal would be 15 - 64 ish Blue Plate Clone is 15 - 57 ish, Purple Plate Clone would be 16 - 60 ish, Unrestricted F/H would be 14 - 65 and Clone 15 - 62.

Both cases you mention what you were and others on now if the Track is any where near 1/8 th 660 lf, your way off on Gearing to run a 12 - 70 on a Purple Clone or a 13 - 66 ish for that matter, it would have to be a bull ring totally out of the throttle both ends of the track with very little grip.

Hope this Helps.

You were told correctly use a clutch driver which will allow you to have 65-67 gears on the back and you'll be ok. After that it's use what ever clutch with them, to give you the maximum rpm on the tach you want. If you can't get up to the rpm you want, then put a smaller clutch driver on it. If you still can't get to the rpm you want, give your child some time to sort things out on the track, get better at driving and the rpm's will get there. Along with the time your driver gets learning how to sort things out on the track. It will also give you some time to sort out how to make the kart work better. You will find exactly how every other kart racer found out, that when you and your driver get better, you will be able to get to the rpm. And then you will start taking gear off. Don't worry about it everyone went through it, it's a learning process.
