Electronics for beginners

What does a new karter need in terms of electronics? Simple tachometer? more? Is a mychron worth it or overkill?
 
I installed a tach on my grandsons kart (20-30$ price range).Some times it works ,some times not.On my kart I have the tach with cylinder head temp also(60-70$range)It works better.If you have some one to take lap times, the 70$ tach would be a good option.
 
Find a cheap mychron 3 or 4 either will provide the information you need, including laptimes
