You don't have to spray them I know some front runners that don't they say that's what the engine builder is for, not recommending not to but just say n you don't have to.

They use nothing but K & N but filter only there theory is added air flow = SPEED, they have no problem sending the engine back to builder more often .

Theres some other "good" filters besides K&N, some love and swear by the R2C, and the Walker i see a lot of.
If you use a good oil, change filter often, use a good pre screen, the S&B filter does just fine.
