Gear and sprocket question

Not sure if this is the correct section but here goes. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to running smaller or larger sprockets on the engine? For argument sake if you could get the same gear ratio running a 16 on the engine versus an 18 and just change the axle gear is there any benefit to one size or the other?

If you are talking an oval, and overhead valve engine, then there is an advantage to utilizing the mini gear system WHEN you learn how to use it correctly.
Just asking about a benefit from an 18 to a 16 could be or could not be beneficial. If you were maximizing your results with the 18, speed wise and gearing wise (proper rpm and fastest lap time possible with the correct rear gear), the 16 may not be beneficial. A 15 would probably be better suited as it keeps you at the desired rear gear better with the mini gear set up.
