In this guide we will cover some basics on a tire program from ground zero, all the way to a national level program to make sure as you travel through your karting career you can maximize your performance. Good luck and let’s go win some races!
From the beginning:
Whether you have just bough your first kart and are looking for a place to start learning this whole “tire game” or you are a seasoned pro, we all have to start at the same spot. We all get four tires and wheels to make the maximum speed for a given track with these seemingly simple objects. So how can there be such a big difference in four wheels and more importantly four round, black, tires? One word: Variables! They are everywhere in racing and when it comes to kart racing the variables in tires and wheels are more important than the bun to a hamburger! In all seriousness, these variables will make a huge difference in how your karting operation will run and perform on the track. Here are the basic variables we deal with on any tire, on any type of kart:
Brand- from choosing which brand works best at a given track or how to manipulate the “spec” brand, this variable is one we see in every level of karting.
Compound- some brands only offer one compound, other can offer over 5, know what they are and what situation they are intended for will give you a head up on competition.
Size- most brands have different sizes and some brands will have multiple sizes for the same tire.
Stagger- the difference in the size of the inside tire compared to the outside tire (in oval racing). Most times stagger is defined with front and rear stagger.
Age- just like we do rubber changes over time. The age of the tire will determine how we go about getting the most out of it.
Psi- or air pressure in the tire has a huge effect on performance. There is also (split) or the difference in air from the inside tires to the outside tires.
Durometer- this is a tool used to measure the hardness of the tire. No matter which compound or brand or prep, keeping the durometer in the correct working range is important.
Wheels- from different brands to different sizes and offsets, wheels play an important role to performance.
Prep- the largest single factor in a tire’s performance, we will discuss this subject in much detail later, just know it is the one thing you want to be correct as much as possible.
Life cycle- all tires have a life cycle and the maintenance of the tires, as well as determining when that cycle is on the downside, are the two things we want to keep up with.
This is just a few of the many topics we will be covering to help maximize you tire program with the Moonshine Tire Prep line.
