Plastic or aluminum. The metal seems less forgiving but it’s lighter? Plastic seems more durable perhaps?

^ 6 of 1, half a dozen the other.

Aluminum is lighter, but when it comes in contact with something solid, bends in against the chain.

Plastic bends in and deflects back. If it's cold, they'll break, but generally they are cheaper and you replace them each year anyway.

Carbon Fiber may be the best deal, but with it comes cost. (And they can break too.)
