How much ground clearance do you have? I don't run a guard but I would think you could get away with having the chain a little proud of it and be ok as long as it's not too close to the ground.
Can you go bigger on the rear sprocket? I was never impressed with the way the chain rolled around a 12T driver, I try to use at least a 13T whenever possible.
