Another thing I have found helpful is compare measurements with a legal part. What is the difference in the measurement ? Not perfection by any means but certainly a good indicator of the difference.

That may not always be a good indicator, as clone engines have variances between batches. This would be the case also with differences between aftermarket parts.

You missed the " legal part " and " Not perfection " just " a good indicator " as to the accuracy of the tool being used when compared to a " legal part ".
