I guess anything that is flat and you could bolt on the hubs would work. Actual toe plates aren't that expensive but work ok. I am sure they aren't as accurate as the laser system but they are better than nothing. Just my opinion. I use the toe plates myself.
Toe plates are every bit as accurate. The laser systems are for convenience, that's the only big benefit, and some have toe and camber in one guage. Again convenience.

The Laser is only as good as the operator . It might make it easier to be accurate.
Though it does square with the rear axle , which really has nothing too contribute too the actual toe measurment.
As they say close only counts in horseshoe's and hand grenades.
